Designing Novel Therapeutics

Bringing cutting-edge drug discovery to the University of Arizona, the Thatcher group is focused on interdisciplinary research in chemistry and biology translating novel therapeutics to the clinic.

Our focus

The Thatcher lab has achieved success in developing small molecule therapeutics for breast cancer and has been lucky enough to see these being given to women to treat metastatic disease in clinical trials. At UofA, we have an opportunity to prioritize study of diseases of aging, including Alzheimer’s and Related Dementia, targeting mechanisms that enhance resilience and increase healthspan; an area of research currently funded by three grants from the National Institute on Aging. In March 2020, the skill of our drug discovery team allowed us to pivot rapidly towards discovery of antiviral agents targeting SARS-CoV-2 to counteract the COVID-19 health crisis, which demonstrates our disease agnostic approach to drug discovery.
